Friday Fit Club - Getting Started with Duckie

*Ladies and germs, I present to you, in all her marvelous glory, Duckie! One of our fabulous fit club team co-founders.*

So last week, my homegirl Nicole wrote a post about the Nike+ Training Club app and the program she was starting.  I had previously downloaded the app in hopes of getting myself into shape but hadn't done anything more than just browse through the workouts.  Yeah, I'm totally the person who will watch fitness videos just to see how much I don't want to do them.

Anyway, after finally signing up for the "Get Lean" program - beginner's level (obviously) - I got off my ass and started Day 1 of the program.  The "Get Lean" program consists of "high intensity body-weight workouts" and I also added running to my program to push myself more and get the most out of the program.  I obviously had no idea what I was getting myself into.

After not working out for AGES, that 30-minute workout killed.  Jogging, burpees, squat jumps, pushups, kick downs, hip lifts, lateral hops...  And though I didn't actually die, I did puke my brains out twice during the workout.  I guess it didn't help that I was eating while I was putting the program together.  And it probably did more harm than good that I took a few sips of vodka right before since I was planning on just sitting my ass down with a drink and reading all night.  That's just one of the down sides to acting on my spontaneous urges.

The up side is that I finally did it!  My body hates me right now, but I felt more energized this morning and I'm excited to continue this program.  Okay, wait - that's not entirely true.  Since I added running to my program (like a dumbass), Day 2 of my program is to run.  Three.  Frikken.  Miles.  Are they frikken crazy or something?  I swear I thought this shit was the beginner's level!?  I can't even run one mile and they want me to run three?  Ho.  Lee.  Crap!

Since I KNOW I won't last three miles tonight, I'm just going to try my best and run as long as I can.  And since I don't have a treadmill, I'll be running around the neighborhood with a stick just in case any stray dogs want to step up.  And Guam has a LOT of stray dogs - big ones.

And now that I think of it, a treadmill is a great gift for someone to give me for Valentine's Day.  Right, honey?  Just kidding.  But not really.

So now that I've finally gotten off my ass (which is now hella sore from all the squats and hip lifts), tell me:  What gets you motivated to work out?  Do you just act on your spontaneous urges and just do it?  Or does it take a little more hyping up and a set schedule to get you moving and keep you going?

Comment below with any motivational tips - it would really help me to overcome this 3-mile hurdle that I have to jump tonight.  And again, Ho.  Lee.  Crap!

Fitness Friday - Workout Buddy

Let's face it...it's the holidays...we're all busy trying to get ready: presents, decorating, food planning, even preparing for family visits. It's hard to squeeze in time to get it all done. I know. I'm hosting Christmas eve this year and I feel like I am in over my head and its only December 14! Whew I am exhausted...I don't want to work out..."I don't have time." WRONG! You know what I have that helps me to make sure that I do make time? My "buddy" Maria. Yup. I have a workout buddy.

Maria is a stay at home mom just like me. Our sons are in the same class at school and we live in the same complex. She's trying to get ready for her 1st holiday away from her family (she just moved here from Chicago over the summer). She's into fitness like I am. We both get those days where all we want to do after we walk the kids to school is just go back to our homes and sit/lay on the couch until our little ones come home at 11am. She has kept me motivated to keep going, and I do the same for her. Periods (sorry, overshare) don't even stop us. She is petite just like I am, so any weight that we gain is very obvious. We've been baking up a storm, and with all those treats, we make sure that we carve out at least 10 minutes of the day to "prep." LOL. Short is one thing...short and chunky is another.

I cherish those 10 minutes of "sanity." We gossip,we laugh, we work out our frustrations of "not enough time in a day." We get it done together. It helps.

I also have workout buddies online as well. These are men and women who I've met through blogging and twitter and even instagram. I like progress motivation. I love seeing when people go to the gym and post sweaty pictures of themselves, or pictures of what workout they are going to do or just completed. I like before and after pictures. I look to these people as motivation as well to keep me going. From them, I find new workouts to keep my body challenged. I even share these workouts with Maria.

I'm lucky that Big Daddy shares a love of fitness with me. He's actually the driving force behind my working out and wanting to be in the best shape I can be. Before Maria, he and I used to work out together at least once a week (our schedules clashed so much that there was only one day we could work out together). He would do his work out and then come and walk me through mine, helping me with form and just pushing out that last rep. Trust me, nothing makes you feel sexier than when you catch your man smiling at you as your doing your reps. It feels just as good as when you're pissed off because he makes you do another rep after you're obviously exhausted and after you crank out that rep he smiles so big and gives you a high five...you forget that you were pissed off just .2 seconds ago LOL.

Working out is tough...and yes...sometimes it is hard to make time for it. But do it. Find someone who shares an interest or love of fitness with you and attach yourself LOL. Seriously. It's so much easier to have someone who is there right next to you physically and even online supporting you. Share your goals with that person...this will help you to remain accountable and not fall of the wagon. In turn, that person will share with you and you can help them as well.

Oh ya...I almost forgot...

Now you KNOW I won't let you off the hook and have an "off" day. :-)
Today's workout is brought to you by Kandee Johnson and Natalie Jill. Perfect and simple to get you through the next couple of weeks...hopefully with your workout buddy.

Fitness Friday - Hey Sexy Lady

Yup I'm talking to YOU! ;-) Heard this song this morning, and I was in such a grove, I swear they were singing it to me! LOL

No matter, what size or shape you are, tall or short, fair skinned, tan or dark YOU are sexy!!!

It's that time of year for all the sweets, cakes, pies and oh the cookies!! Mmmmmm....I want some now. LOL. This is also the time of the year that we (women) "forget" about eating healthy and slack on working out. The weather is cooler and all ya wanna do is cuddle on the couch. MmHmmm. Yup, me too. NO! I will not go down this holiday season. I made some great progress and made great habits that I do NOT want to just go away. YOU...YOU shouldn't want that either. Get a jump start on your new year's resolution to be healthy and fit. I challenge each of you to do the below video at least twice in the next week. Twice...that's it. All you need is a pair of dumbbells or water bottles or soup cans...no excuses. The whole workout once time through is about 15 minutes.

Yup it's Casey again. I LOVE her!

Fitness Friday - Leggies

"It's Friday and I'm ready to sing. Pick up my girls and hit the party scene. Tonight...oh, oh it's alright ummm"

Were you just singing? Heehee, me too! Well lovers it IS Friday!! *cue crazy applauding crowd* Oh and it has been a doozy of a week for me. I was not feeling so good the beginning of this week but am definitely doing better. (And just so y'all know...VonTrapp aka CRAZY SICK LADY aka my MIL for my new followers) got me and the barbarians sick over Thanksgiving weekend). So I haven't really worked out all week. Except for walking the boys to school and then home and then back to school to pick them up and then back home. Only having 1 car is actually pretty awesome in that sense...always working out.
Well today since I feel great, I decided to start back up slow and work out my legs. I mean with all that walking, I know my legs can handle it...or so I thought LOL. It was intense. Good intense. The right kind of intensity to get me back to where I left off.

Dear Cassey...I love you! Love always, my legs

Work those leggies! It's tights, leggings, jeggings season so keep your legs looking FAB!

Fitness Friday - We're going TOPLESS

Goood Moooooooorrrnnniiiiiiiing! Too much? Heehee. It's FRIDAY! Day 1 of Formula 1 weekend. But before all that I thought I would bring back.....

That's right folks! Thanksgiving is less than a week away. And then comes holiday parties. And then Christmas. And then New Year's. You need to get into a routine NOW.

If you follow my other blog, you know I love BexLife and BodyRock and Blogilates. Today I'm bringing you the workout that I actually did this morning. Like literally maybe 10 minutes ago. It's from the bikini blaster series from this past summer. Bikini season is year long in my eyes ;-)

Get of your booty and get topless!!! But if perhaps you may be at work or at a coffee shop or something, wait till you get home ;-)

My glamorous life...

...as a new SAHM...

My day usually starts...duh when I wake up...jk. But I walk mini barbarian #1 to school, and go for a quick mile run before coming home.

I finish working out with a quick video workout of some sort...BodyRock, or BexLife, or like this morning Tone It UP

I hang out with this guy until mini barbarian #2 comes home from school. He wasn't to thrilled about me trying to "pose" him and get him to look at the camera like a good boy.

Dinner prep at 9am. P.S. I made a lamb stew and it was freaking amaze balls!!! GO ME!

I spend "down time" (which is when the child is fed and doesn't want to play with me) scrolling through my IG feed. I am soooooooo making those apples for dessert!

Same time for the past 2 days...2:50ish, he gets bored with playing by himself and comes to watch a movie with me in the living room. He picks the movie and I start straightening up and then we sit and watch. About 10 minutes into the movie I look over and this is what I see.

My baby sis is officially a college student. She is totally homesick, though I don't think she would ever admit it. But I facetime with her whenever she calls. I miss her craziness.

How's y'alls week been so far?

I'm hoping to come across a new hobby and continue my pinterest crafting. And don't forget to follow me on instagram and pinterest!!

Fitness Friday 4 - Family Fitness

I've missed a couple of these due to LIFE and had to go back and actually count how many I have done. So let's do this then shall we...

Working out for me and my family is down right fun...like seriously! Big Daddy and I try to work out at least 4 times a week, leaving the weekends as our "active rest days" which includes fun active stuff with the little dudes. For the dudes, working out is just part of life...not anything scheduled. They see me and the hubs doing it and they want to do it too. Awesome right?!

warning: here comes the mommy bragging moment...

So awesome that they even come up with their own workouts...

The beep you here in the beginning is their tabata timer. YES, my dudes do tabata too. Now before anyone goes off on a rant about pushing your kids and making them do crazy stuff, let me (pre) interject and say my guys ASK to work out. And this little part of their workout that they did, like I mentioned, they came up with on their own. (They super love video games, hence the title "new level") The one in the blue and white shorts is Juju, my 6 year old, and in the green and white is BamBam and he's 4. They workout about 3-4 times a week either at the playground in our complex or they walk to the elementary school to run sprints. :-) I am one proud proud mommy.

Fitness for anyone, young or older, should just be a part of life. Make it fun by doing something fun and including your whole family. It doesn't have to always be lifting weights in a gym or completing some DVD or online exercise program. Go for a walk, go hiking. Heck its summer time, go swimming! Just keep active and trust me, you, your family, you'll all be happier and healthier and fitter. And you're doing it together.

This week I started a new workout regime.

The hardest part was starting back up after almost 2 weeks off .

My greatest accomplishment this week was not eating the greasy pizza my office ordered for lunch on Tuesday.

Okay, I felt guilty because instead of having a black coffee like I should, I added some salted caramel hot cocoa mix to it. Not once this week, but twice.

Next week I'm gonna try replacing one meal a day (meat, veggies, starch) with a vegan option. (More on this in a future Fitness Friday post).

I hope everyone has had a great week! I would love to see y'all link up as well. How are you keeping fit? Do you involve your family too? What fun family activities do y'all do?
If you don't want to do a post, just answer the 5 questions. Easy peasy. So go ahead and do your post, head on over to Frikken Duckie, to link up, and come back here and let me know! I wanna see what y'all are up to. :-)

Fitness Friday - a link up and share

Ladies (and gents) its not just about bikini season.
It's about LIVING a healthy life.

Y'all know how much I obsess love to workout. I've teamed up with Duckie to bring you nothing but fitness/workout goodness every Friday from now on. And we want to hear from you too! Tell us what your doing or eating or both. Got a great exercise that you love? Link up and tell everyone about it! Let's challenge and motivate each other.

So for my first Fitness Friday post, I want to talk about time. We all have it, but we all wish he had more of it. "Not enough hours in the day." I used to think like this too. Especially when it came to working out. Well I have a (mini) solution for you = 4 minutes. Yup that's right. Just 4 minutes...

The workout:
0:00 - 0:20 high knees
0:20 - 0:30 rest
0:30 - 0:50 mountain climbers
0:50 - 1:00 rest
1:00 - 1:20 jump squats
1:20 - 1:30 rest
1:30 - 1:50 walking push ups
1:50 - 2:00 rest
2:00 - 2:20 high knees
2:20 - 2:30 rest
2:30 - 2:50 mountain climbers
2:50 - 3:00 rest
3:00 - 3:20 jump squats
3:20 - 3:30 rest
3:30 - 3:50 walking push ups
3:50 - 4:00 rest (WATER)

Feeling froggy? Do 2 sets with about a 1-2 min rest in between. Work up until you can do 3 sets. You can also definitely change up the exercises. MOST importantly...watch your form. Its not so much how many you can do right now in 20 seconds, but how many you can properly do without losing perfect form in 20 seconds. You can really hurt yourself if you're not careful.

I hope you join us every Friday for this new meme. Maybe y'all could even challenge me with new workouts.

I'm a bodyrockin, mamavation 2 week challenger

I've gotten some emails asking me "WHERE ARE YOU" and "Please come back to my life" over the past week. Yes in those exact words too! I LOVE you guys!
So where have I been? Working my tiny tush out, that's where! :)
I am on this forever quest of "skinny." Yes skinny. Let's face it, I don't want to just be healthy, I want to LOOK good too. I don't like bulky muscles and I don't want to be stick thin. Lean? I guess maybe that's a better word for it, but I like the word skinny (shoot me if you don't like it) so I am going to use it.
Anyhoo...I really do like working out BUT....yes but. But not like "oh I'm lazy or I don't have time,. BUT I get bored VERY quickly. *have you guys noticed I like to all caps stuff* I get so excited about new workouts, but the thought of being repetitive just bores me to death. So I am always on the hunt for new and fun and NON repetitive workouts.
Alas my loves I think I have found my answer. In 2 places in fact. First place, because I did it first, was the Mamavation 2 week challenge. When the year started I knew I needed a new workout. Bookie Boo *I know you know Bookie Boo!* mentioned doing another 2 week challenge on twitter to kick off the new year. ANOTHER one? There were more? Well 2 weeks...heck ya! Perfect! Perfect amount of time so I wouldn't get bored!  Well Mr. Bookie Boo creates all the workouts for the challenge (I think) and boy oh boy oh boy! Those 2 weeks flew by and I was hooked! I even lost an inch all over! What , what! Ya totally feelin myself.
I did a burpee challenge on twitter towards the end of last year with a few fit freaks here in Austin and was introduced to my second place, bodyrock.tv. Body-freaking-rock tv! WOW! I am in love. They were in the middle of a monthly challenge when the mamavation challenge ended so I did a couple workouts and got hooked. When February started they decided to do another monthly challenge. So I jumped right in. Whoa baby! Tough stuff but I love it! Before actually doing any of the workouts I thought I was in pretty good shape...and I am...just not really. Talk about shock and awe. I am challenging my body in ways that I have been looking for but never found.
AND...ANOTHER mamavation 2 week challenge was announced and that started last Monday. Can you keep up? LOL

So I am in week 3 of bodyrockin and week 2 of the 2 week challenge. CUH-RAY-ZEE! Never thought I would say this, but thank goodness the 2 week challenge ends Saturday.

I've been sweating, and eating better and just feel good all around.
That's where I've been. :-)
Thanks for missing me! I totally miss you guys too.
P.S. If you want to know more about my bodyrockin, *self promo in 3, 2,...* check out my other blog Workin It where I tell you what the daily workout is, what I thought about it, and some plain randomness.

Friday Fitness Tip - CORE

So its been about a month since my last fitness post. If anyone tried doing any of the suggestions I made, let me know your story so I can feature you in my next friday fitness post!
Still can't find the time to do any sort of workout? Well I have some suggestions that you can do ANY time!
Stand in front of a mirror, and lift up your shirt so you can see your belly. Yes, just lift it up. Now tighten up your stomach and flex your abs. Hold it for 5 seconds and then release. If you're tightening it and holiding it in you should feel it tighten not in just your stomach area but around your waist and in your lower back. That my friends is your core. Your core is the center of every movement you make day in and day out. Stand in front of the mirror at least once a day and work from holding it in 5 seconds to 10 seconds and then to 15 seconds. Do about 3 "sets" of these. Don't have the time to just look in the mirror, don't worry, I got more. LOL!
Have to vaccum today? Tighten your core every other room you have to vaccum. Cooking dinner? Tighten your core for 5 seconds every 5 minutes. Washing dishes? Do the same thing as if you were cooking. Grocery shopping? Tighten your core as you push your cart. And here's a good one: sitting at the computer? Yes! Sit up straight and tighten your core for 10 seconds every 10 minutes. You can work your core do ANYTHING! Now if you are able to get to a gym or workout at your home, keep your core engaged during your entire workout. The benefits are endless. Building a stronger core will even help you carry that sleeping child from the car to the bed!
Another thing to try...get on the floor in a push up position. Make sure your body is straight as a board, no booty in the air. LOL. Now engage your core and lower yourself onto your forearms, slowly. You may have to slide your feet back the first time to get the perfect position. Breathing deep and slowly, hold for 10 seconds. This is the infamous plank position. Then raise yourself back up to the push up position slowly. Do 3 sets. As you get stronger you can cross your legs and put one foot on top of the other. Remeber do to both sides. Now another thing you can add...when you are down on your forearms, after 10 seconds take your booty up to the sky. Remember to keep your core engaged and your forearms on the ground. Just hold for 3 seconds and come back to plank.
Remember your core controls all your movements. The stronger it is, the better your body will feel. Not to mention you will see those abs again.

My day in a nutshell

So I had a pretty interesting day today. First off, I got to experience probably one of the stupidest court preceedings ever! Like big daddy tweeted..It was better than t.v. Anyways..big daddy and I don't get many days off together anymore, so we decided after lunch to go and work out together. Now y'all know how passionate my darling husband is about working out, well, he NEVER works out with a partner..NEVER! So when he agreed to workout with me I was completely shocked. It was his "free" day (whatever that means) so he said he would show me his core workout that he does. Now when I say my husband does not do a single crunch, you'd probably think I was lying. Especially since he's got amazing abs! He just always works on his core. Its amazing I tell you! LOL! But anyways long story short, we had an amazing workout and I learned a lot from him. I didn't do a single crunch or ab focused exercise, but my abdominal section and lower back are screaming right now. They don't hurt, but I know I'll feel it in the morning. Absolute craziness I tell you!
So I know this going completely to the left but...is anyone out there as excited as I am about the palm pre making its debut in a couple days? I am a self proclaimed palm treo junkie! I don't know how I ever owned a phone that wasn't a palm. Funny thing is, I only just got my first palm phone like at the end of last year...well I actually think it was the beginning of this year. But needless to say, I am hooked..I'm a believer lol! I have asked big daddy for the pre, and am hoping to get it for christmas. You know you can't get the first generation of ANY new cel phone. Gotta give it some time for all the kinks to be worked out. But I do plan to make a trip out to my sprint store that I always go to, to get a "hands on", love at first sight, real live, obsessed based "feel" of the phone.
But it is almost midnight here and I think I've rambled on enough for the day/night. I'll be back with y'all tomorrow.
Later gators!

My Friday fitness tip

I haven't been around much lately because of my crazy, ever-changing, work schedule. But in my busy schedule I always make time to work-out. And I owe it all to big daddy! He is super into working out and being fit. "I may not be the tallest or the biggest guy around, but I am pound for pound strong."
After I had tank I was blessed to have dropped my pregnancy weight and then some almost instantly. Now when I say instantly I mean like 2-3 months. I don't want to lose weight...I just want to be fit and lean...pound for pound strong. I am not, nor was I ever, the dreaded F-word (fat). But I am what some would call skinny-fat. I have a little extra on my arms, thighs, and midsection. With 4 children the thought of working out for me was as foreign as speaking mandarin chinese! LOL. I was tired all the time and whenever I looked into the mirror, images of my former cheerleading self would flash next to the image that was looking back at me. So I asked big daddy what I could do to at least start trying to get back into working out. And he gave me the best advice ever! From that I am the person I am today: on my way to a leaner, fitter, healthier person. So what was this great advice you ask? Well here it is.....

3 sets of 10 pushups
3 sets of 10 squats
3 sets of 10 crunches

Is that it? Unbelieveably yes. 3 times a week for about a month. It takes no more than 20 minutes. Between each set, you rest 30-60 seconds. Do it as soon as you wake up, in your pajamas if you want. Thats what I did. If tank was awake, I would lay him under me when I did pushups, and lay him in between my legs when I did squats. I would kiss him or tickle him when I came to the ground.
Now it does take some discipline. Some days I thought, OMG I'm just too tired. Or I'll just do it tomorrow. But as the weeks went on it did get easier and I was really starting to notice the changes in my body.
Once you get used to the workout, change it up. I would do a set of pushups, then squats, then crunches...rest...2nd set of squats, then crunches, then pushups...rest...last set of crunches, then pushups, then squats. You can change it up however you want. You can even add weights.
This is the perfect beginner workout if you ask me. I started to even add jumping jacks in between sets to get some cardio in and get my heart pumping.
My workouts have grown since then, but I wouldn't be where I'm at if I didn't start out slow. You don't need a fancy gym membership or fancy equipment. You just need determination and drive. The drive to a fitter you. So try it out. What have you got to lose? And please...let people know...Let them know your goals of becoming a fitter you. You need a support team. Blog about it, tweet about it. Email me and I'll be your personal cheerleader here in Louisiana. (mommybeautiful [at] att [dot] net)
So long for now moms (& dads). And here's to a fitter (and healthier) YOU!!!!!

Aahhhh sundays

This is my first sunday off from work in a LONG time. Last sunday didn't count because I was driving ALL DAY. Anyways...I don't mind working on sundays for the simple fact that we get paid premium pay. What's that you ask? Plain and simple we get time and a half any sunday we work. But sometimes I NEED a sunday off. I get to stay home and be lazy because all the cleaning was done yesterday. The only thing I need to worry about is dinner and thats not for another 7 hours. Sundays are also the best times for me to connect with my boys. Big daddy is at work until 6pm, so its just me and my boys. So the plans for today? NOTHING. I just want to sit and enjoy them today. Like right now as I type this, skinny is reading a book to juju, who is actually sitting on his lap listening, and milkshake is sitting on the couch reading a book. And in the background is the sopranos. Aahhh sundays.
Tomorrow is (drum roll please) my 29th birthday! YAY! I've actually been looking forward to this all month. Now big daddy is usually pretty good about my birthday. I don't want anything except a birthday cake...a home made cake like we do for everybody in the house. Well I had to work yesterday. As I was leaving for work, he was leaving for walmart to get groceries. So I got excited. I could already taste the butter yellow cake with chocolate frosting! Well I got home at 11 last night, and like a kid at christmas time I went into our pantry to look for the cake box. NOTHING.  Ok, ok my birthday isn't until tomorrow. But I was feeling a little bummed. So this morning I gently remind him that I still wanted a butter yellow cake. He said ok. So lets hope he doesn't forget.
So what's up for the rest of the day? Well, I'll be nursing my aching muscles for one. Big daddy and I joined a local gym on thursday. Yesterday morning before work I went and took a spin class..an hour long spin class. For starters  bike seats are so not cool! I mean hello!  But besides how uncomfortable the seat was, it was overall, an awesome workout. My heart was pumping and I never felt better. I knew that when I hurt later, it was going to be a good hurt. So this morning I roll over to get off the bed and OMG! Everything below my waist to my knees hurts. My area down there feels like one big bruise. Stupid bike seat! And to top it all off, my "friend" paid me a visit last night when I was at work. I guess my "friend" is a blessing in disguise, because I don't even wanna think about sex right now! LMAO! And this is only the next day after the workout. The third day is the worst! Pray for me. LOL

Hubby received the perfect pull ups I ordered for him yesterday. He was like a kid on christmas and couldn't wait to set it up. He didn't want to put it outside where it could possibly get damaged by the rain so he decided that the best place for it would be in our bedroom doorway. But of course he had to wait. Tank was in his crib taking a nap. But let me tell you...as soon as we heard his cries and I got him outta his crib, he had taken everything out of the box and plastic that it came in and was measuring where everything was gonna be screwed in.
I must say that I like it. He showed me and the boys how to use it. I could really benefit from this too! The handles come off the bar so you can adjust it to your shoulder's width apart. He showed me three different ways to get my arms and back stronger in order to do regular pull ups on it.
So thanks to me, oh and my points from the j-o-b, we got a great workout device.
I totally recommend this to everyone...from the fitness dummy to the fitness pro.
