a celebration of marriage

Today I am doing my first ever guest post on Mrs. H. She gathered a bunch of us to talk about our marriages and how we make it work, what we've learned...I'm so happy she asked me to be a part of it! I love Mrs. H with every being in me...and can you believe we've only "met" in blog land? She is my twin most definitely!

So head over to Life as Mrs. H, and read my AWESOME post. You know I never disappoint. ;)

I'm on vacation!!!!

That's right folks...I am on vacation! Not like on an actual vacation like my friend Nini (you lucky duck!) but just on vacay from my full time job. Last day of work was Friday the 23rd and I don't see my desk again until January! I sooooooo needed this time off too. Time to re-evaluate, time to purge, time to get back in touch with my family and my hubby. There is something about sleeping in (in my world that means getting up at 8am instead of 6am) that just makes my day so fulfilling LOL. I get to basically play all day! I mean who wouldn't enjoy that?!
I always miss my dudes when I go to work, but wow, I feel like I'm missing so much. Yes they are in school almost all day but damn. Being home with them, I have once again gone into re-evaluating my work situation. Right now, its ideal for me to work full time. Big Daddy and I have talked about me not working off and on since the school year started. But just since Friday, we've talked about it way more than we ever have. I'll keep y'all updated on what I am thinking about doing. But the gist of it comes down to me either 1. going to part time hours or 2. quitting completely and going back to school full time. Time will tell.
Besides talking about work, I have been slowly purging a bunch of things we have...clothes, books, furniture, DVDs...etc. I want to get everything completely organized by the end of January and am taking full advantage of my free time. I also have a plan to turn my night stand into a small vanity area. so far the biggest part has been done, and that was the dudes closets. Clothes and toys and stuff was thrown away or donated and everything organized. Everything now has a home...even the Nerf bullets have a place to call their own instead of being housed at the bottom of random bins. I also cleaned out our linen closet. Next up will be my part of our closet and the shelving unit inside the closet that currently holds more of my "stuff."

Lots going on in the locker room this week. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and ate until their heart's content. I most definitely did. And yesterday, I got back to the business of getting my body back into tip top shape.

Little crafty me

So I, like most of you, are addicted in love with Pinterest. Juju's Kindergarten teacher is AMAZING and I wanted to actually make her something just as amazing as she is. I saw this and thought OH MY GOD...PERFECT!

And so I began...I tried to lay everything out one by one next to each other just for placements sake, but it just wasn't working. So I went with north, south, east, west....

Then glued a crayon in the middle of the "section" and so on and so forth...until this...

Of course I wasn't done yet. It took a total of 2 days for everything to set and not slide off. I was still waiting for glue to dry this morning. But here it is in all its finished glory...

The picture quality totally sucks, but isn't it just cute?! I got the little ornament (it says "Teacher" in green in the middle-green is Juju's favorite color) from Michael's for only a $1.00. In fact...everything cost a dollar or less:
Crayons: $0.64
Styrofoam wreath/circle: $1.00
Ornament: $1.00
(I already had the ribbon and the glue)

Multicultural night

My family is the definition of multicultural: I am Hawaiian and Filipino and Big Daddy is black and German = mutts! Lol
Juju's school held a multicultural night last night. VonTrapp even came and made a German lentil soup and some German cookies. Juju and BamBam sported their barongs (traditional Filipino shirts). Y'all I'm already planning for next year!

A call for bloggers/reviewers - Diamond Candles

Me? I love candles. I love how a specific candle scent can make you remember certain things. Like the smell of black cherry takes me back to the days Big Daddy and I first started dating. A lemon scented candle brings me right into the kitchen of my aunt, who spent a lot of her time showing me how to cook when I was little.
I could and have watched a candle just burn...so pretty. And now I wouldn't be just watching a candle burn...I would be waiting. Waiting for it to slowly burn, smelling all of its goodness. Waiting for a peak of that special little pouch.

Diamond Candles Company would like to invite you to Review and Giveaway their Precious soy candles. Why "precious" you'll ask? Well, each candle harbors a ring valued anywhere from $10-$100-$500-$5000 each. It's anticipation that really gets you going! What kind of a ring am I going to unveil from the glittery pouch hidden inside the soy wax?

Reconnecting

It is the Monday after a long weekend and all I want to do is go home to my guys (yes I am still at work). I had an AWESOME weekend to say the least and really didn't do anything.
VonTrapp picked up the dudes Thursday afternoon while I was still here at work. And before I go on I just wanna say that I am in LURVE with technology! Well mostly just my iPhone. LOL. Why you ask? Well you know how I've bee getting all misty eyed because the dudes are growing up so fast? Well before they left, I got to facetime with them. I got kissies and all! Good stuff. How we humans lived and survived without technology like this is beyond me ;)
*moving on*
So I get home Thursday and there were no screams for mommy *tear*, just Big Daddy waiting for me to hand over the keys so he could go to rugby practice. But oh how I love that man! He cooked pork ribs and beans and greens! YUM! A quiet night alone to watch Grey's Anatomy..AWESOME.
Had to work Friday...meh. I tried to get the day off stating that my hubs is a veteran (which he is) and that I NEEDED to be home with him. Didn't work. But Big Daddy did pick me up from work and we went to get pizza and beer for dinner. It was great...we just talked and talked about nothing at all...just like when we first met. A little bit after dinner we went and hung out with a guy who he plays rugby with, Mike, and Mike's gf Erin. We had a blast just hanging out and laughing. We didn't stay over very long because the guys had a rugby tournament in Houston the next day and had to be up early to drive. When we got home, we actually cuddled and fell asleep together just like that.HA! That ish never happens! Mostly because I need my space when I sleep. But it was nice waking up to a full bladder needing to be emptied in the arms of my rugby player.
I dropped Big Daddy off at Mike's house early Saturday morning. Can I just tell you how nice it was to not have to worry about anyone but myself?! I mean I laid in bed and watched tv, read a bunch of blogs, and even (FINALLY) did my nails. It was great! Of course I did do responsible things like get my oil changed and tires rotated, and went and did laundry. Big Daddy and his team made it all the way to the finals in the tournament but lost the championship game. He called me after each game to give me the score and the rundown of how the game went. We talked and laughed and joked...just like when we first "dated." We had made plans to go to a friend's house to watch the Pacman fight so as soon as I got done with laundry I headed over there and waited until Big Daddy got back into town so I could go pick him up. The whole ride from Houston to Austin, we were texting. Like teenagers in love, with me giggling with every sweet text he sent. Straight cakin! That's what we call it: getting all mushy, acting sprung...cakin! He kept telling me he loved me and wished I was there when each game ended "like its supposed to be." For the first time in a long time, I got that butterfly feeling. When I went to pick him up he just hugged me and acted like he didn't want to let me go. Mind you, they played 4 rugby games and then got straight in the car and drove back here. He was NOT smelling any kinds of fresh. He was far from it! LMAO! But for the first time, I didn't care. I felt "in love." After the fight we came home, took a shower and, again, fell asleep in each others arms.
I woke up Sunday worried I had over slept and was going to be late for work. LOL. I was too happy when I went to the bathroom and looked at my phone and it said Sunday, November 13. And there it was, a text message from Big Daddy. What the?! It was sent at 3:27am and said: "I love you Nicole." four words, and my heart skipped a beat.
We had to go pick up the dudes later so we got coffee and bagels and then went grocery shopping. We held hands the entire time. Even on the 45 minute drive he held my hand. Once I saw BamBam's face through the window of VonTrapp's house, a part of me got sad. My romantic (to me) weekend was about to end. My sweet BamBam was in the middle of eating a nice hunk of chocolate cake and he just got up and ran to me and wrapped his sweet little body around my legs. Oh how I missed him and Juju. We stayed for awhile, and finished up some laundry we brought. Juju practiced shooting hoops in the driveway and even made a couple shots! Now he wants to play basketball. They were both hanging by a thread by the time we left VonTrapp's house. And just when I thought my romantic week had ended, he grabbed my hand in the car and didn't let go until we pulled up into our driveway.

Oh what a weekend! I got some much needed ME time to reconnect with myself and of course I got to reconnect with my love :D Now here's to keeping the love alive! Kiss your man/woman...right now damnit!

Gangster (teehee)

Dropping off Juju at school this morning...

Crossing guard: Its really windy this morning Mrs. J, where's your jacket? Aren't you cold?

Juju: Oh my my mommy is fine. She's gangster.

Crossing guard: (talking to Juju) Oh I see. Well you look very warm today. But aren't your legs cold? (he did have a jacket on but was wearing shorts)

Juju: Naw. I'm gangster too. And it gets hot. Pants are dumb. I like shorts. Makes me run real fast. Cuz you know, I'm gangster.

Obviously he gets it from his mama. LOL! That boy cracks me up!

Growing pains...I am THAT mom

Last fall, Juju wanted so much to play t-ball. We went to the orientation meeting and got all the info and thought this was a great thing for him. Practice was fun. All the kids got along great. That first game was awesome! All the boys were super excited. The coach created the lineup and my Juju was going to be 3rd to bat. He steps up to the tee, takes his stance and swings. I am THAT mom who lost it behind sunglasses.

On August 21st, the first day of kindergarten, my Juju was so excited he could barely contain himself. We walked him to his class, helped him put away his school supplies, and watched him walk on over to the mat where all the other kids were sitting and started talking to them. He was smiling from ear to ear. I was THAT mom who almost cried in the class. (I cried as we left the school)  Last year when he came for Pre-K the same thing happened. You would have thought that I would be over it. But  kindergarten is school school. Its different. At least that's what I tell myself to justify the almost crying inside the class.

This past Monday, September 26th, was another moment when I lost it. My sweet Juju would be catching the bus home from school. I normally take a late lunch at work and pick him up. Then I bring him all the way home and then come all the way back to work. Ya, totally not good for the gas tank. But I've been so conflicted with him riding the bus. Yes its convenient and just smart, but OMG I hear the stories of kids getting left on the bus or being dropped off at the wrong stop. I know he's a smart kid but those damn what ifs.
I was THAT mom who still took a late lunch to go to the school to make sure he even got on the bus.
I didn't say anything when I saw him walking with the other "Bee" bus riders. He saw me and told the teacher, "that's my mommy." She in turn asked him if he was riding the bus and he proudly said yes. She looked at me and mouthed, "is he riding the bus?" I am THAT mom who sadly nodded her head yes and nonchalantly wiped a tear from her eye.
*that's him in the green shirt, 2nd from the right*

I am THAT mom, who stayed teary eyed as she watched her son get on the bus and sit down. I am THAT mom who almost really cried as the bus drove off.
But look at how happy he was when daddy met him at the bus stop..

He's growing so fast and I just get worse and worse. I never understood why THOSE moms were always so...wimpy and clingy. Get over yourself! Now look...I AM THAT mom.
And to think...my sweet BamBam is starting Pre-K next year. I'm going to be a total wreck!

Momma's got a new pair of heels!

Well actually Heelys.

We, well I, recently got a pair of Heelys to keep and "test drive". I know you're thinking what the heck?! But I only got a pair because they didn't come in either of the dude's shoe sizes. Let the fun begin! I placed my order for what I thought was cool and hip and something that I could heel around with jeans and a cute top on and not look like a mom trying to be a teenager. (I secretly covet the pink sparkly pair, still to this day)
Anyways...I ordered and that same day at the grocery store I saw 2 boys "heeling" through the aisles. First thought was, damn kids where are your parents. But then....queue heavenly music....I realized, OMG YES! That's going to be me!
I was ecstatic to come home from work about a week later to see that cool black and red box sitting on my dining room table. My poor Juju. The box came right before his birthday and he thought it was for him. :( I promised him that as soon as his feet grew big enough for the smallest size, I would get him a pair. I love love the pair I decided to get. Very grown up but still super cool. And goodness me, they are super comfortable! Y'all know that I don't like shoes, but I put them on without socks and they felt great. Big Daddy helped to put the wheels on them for me and all I could think about was heeling through the grocery store. But seriously, the ability to take the wheels off and where them just like a regular pair of sneakers is great too. Did you see what a great looking pair I got in that picture above?
I wish he got a video of me, because boy oh boy I was a hot mess! I could barely get up on my heel to do any rolling in the first place. But I did eventually get it...with some coaching. And by coaching I mean telling me how to first take off on the balls of my feet/shoes and then lean back on my heels/wheels. It was tons of fun. After awhile I tried to get fancy and go in between "walking" and heeling, but then I hit some uneven sidewalk that sent me into our yard of dead grass and dirt. It did make for some great laughs. (Still to this day I am reminded of how mommy thought she was so cool and then fell in the dirt)
One thing I wasn't expecting was my calves and abs feeling so tight in the morning. A workout?! Definitely a plus! I will definitely be getting the dudes a pair so we can heel into the sunset together.

To see all the other styles Heelys carries, visit heelys.com. You can also view videos and how-to guides on their website. (I probably should have done that before attempting to heel LOL).
You can also connect with Heelys on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

*disclosure - I was provided with a free pair of Heelys in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my very own and not influenced by Heelys or anyone else.*

I remember

As I sit here this morning watching footage of this day, I give tears to the brave. I see the flames and the brave flagging to let us know they are still there...alive...trapped. I hear the 911 tapes. Its one sided, but can imagine the panic on the other end of the line. My heart is pounding and I feel cold. Thoughts of what I was doing that day flood my head...
I got up to go to class that morning. I stepped outside and it was a ghost town. Did I wake up early on Saturday thinking I had class? I ran back into my apartment. Damnit! I left the freaking tv on again. And I saw it. The 2nd plane hit the tower.
I was 21 living & going to school in Las Vegas at the time. I had never felt alone ever until that moment. 10 years later, married with 2 more children, I remember. Skinny & Milkshake were 5 & 3...I don't think they remember. I will remember for them. I will remember for Juju & BamBam who will hopefully never know of this type of devastation. Who at the current time is laughing & singing, watching Rio. They will learn. They will ask questions & I will answer with what I remember.
I will always remember.

Grandparents lunch

To celebrate grandparents day on Sunday, Juju's school had a grandparents lunch. Unfortunately, all of Juju's grandparents & great grandparents don't live near us. Well except for VonTrapp but ya well...
Anyhoo...I decided to go & have lunch with instead of the GPs. At lunch I told him I wanted to take a pic of him to send to them. This is what I got...crazy kid...I have NO idea where he gets that from...

A cool, refreshing treat!

The following was taken from Texas Vox:

Whoa baby! It makes me kinda glad that I work inside an office building and not outside. Even though I like being outside. Heck I ride with the windows down everyday. Besides having lots of water to hydrate, me and the dudes love cold/cool snacks. I mean popsicles are great and all but this is easy! There are 3 steps  for the most perfect cool snack:

Step 1: go to the store and buy green seedless grapes.
Step 2: wash them when you get home and then put them in the freezer for a couple hours.
Step 3: take them out of the freezer and enjoy!

See?! Easy peasy. The grapes never get frozen solid like ice cubes. Instead they get kinda slushie. SOOOO yummy! I've tried red/purple grapes but they just don't taste as great to me. But you may like it :) My dudes like to cut them in half and suck the slush out lol.

Hope you give it a try!

Nicole's ABCs

If you've been a follower for awhile, you know how much I like doing these ABC type of things. I got this from Jacqui over at Wacky Jacqui's Designs. (Yup, the designer who designed the beautiful blog that you're looking at right now). I haven't done one in awhile so here we go...

A. Age: 31

B. Bed size: queen. though we really need a king.

C. Chore you dislike: it would be a tie between washing dishes and doing/putting away laundry. I have been known to go out and buy underwear because its been weeks since I've done laundry. The longest I've probably gone is 3 weeks.

D. Dogs: 1 named Diesel who will be celebrating his 5th birthday this coming November.
 (isn't he so handsome?)
E. Essential start to your day: Words with friends :)

F. Favorite color: Black. Everything I own is black, shoes, pants, purses...everything

G. Gold or silver: I like gold. It goes well with my tan :)

H. Height: I'm a little itty bitty one...4'7"

I. Instruments you play(ed): I played the ukulele as a kid and played piano for a couple years in elementary school.

J. Junk food: mmmmm ANYTHING sweet :) But my ultimate would either be a caramel frap from Starbucks or a caramel frappe from McDonald's

K. Kids: 4 boys...Skinny (15), Milkshake (13), Juju (5), BamBam (3)

L. Live: I guess this is supposed to be where do I live. AUSTIN TEXAS BABY!

W. What makes you run late: Brushing my teeth. I will be dressed and ready to go, walking out the door and then its like oh shit! I forgot to brush my teeth. And then I gotta remember where I put my keys down when I remembered I didn't brush my teeth and then next thing you know its been like 10 min.

X. X-rays you've had: Head, neck, back, both shoulders, both knees, both ankles, stomach. (I was a cheerleader for 12+ years)

Function table?!

In 6 days I will have a kindergartener! Super excited and a tad bit sad at the same time.
So this morning in the car we were talking about backpack:

ME: Juju, we're going to get your new backpack this weekend.
JUJU: Oh yeah? Cool. It has to have function. you know, like pockets for my stuff.
ME: You mean it has to be functionable?
JUJU: FUNCTION TABLE?! You so silly. Functions are not tables. Functions are like pockets to put my new stuff. Like pencils, my water bottle.
ME: Pockets make your backpack functionable by having pockets that you can put stuff in.
JUJU: Well ok. *mutters quietly: a function table is not even real.*
ME: No Juju, its funk-tion-able (stressing each syllable)
JUJU: Ok, ok I get it. Backpacks have function. They called pockets.

I decided to not go all dictionary on him. Smart kid, got the basic concept. Whatev...I made "that" and I'm proud to send that to kindergarten (by THAT, I of course mean him).

HELLo HOTgust

RECORD HIGHS last week. RECORD HIGHS. Not complaining too much. Spent a lot of time at work (BOO!), at the pool, and at splash pads. I love that we can be outside until 9pm and still be in the water without feeling cold. I got nice and golden last week and plan to be even bronzer this week.

So how has everyone been? How are y'all handling the heat?
The dudes have been enjoying their summer vacay and Big Daddy started training for the upcoming rugby season. He's currently playing in a touch league to keep up with his cardio too. And speaking of Big Daddy, operation surprise birthday party had to get changed up. Why you ask? Because...HE FOUND OUT! Yes folks he did. Long story short, I was texting back forth with a friend of ours about plans for the party and he saw the texts. BOOO-HISSS! Don;t worry. we changed up the plans so hopefully he'll still be surprised.
I have been looking for something to 'do on the side' and am happy that I finally found something. I have friends that do Mary Kay who have been hounding me to sign up. I just don't feel like I should have to 'work' that hard for a side gig. So I searched around...for fun stuff of course and finally made my decision. A couple months back I actually won some Jamberry nail shields from Stephanie over at Babes Rockin Mami. FABULOUS! What a great concept. They are nail shields, so they don't chip. I recently tried the Sally Hansen nail polish strips. I was impressed by those but they still chipped like nail polish. I put in a request online on the Jamberry nails website and someone contacted me the very next day. After emailing back and forth, I decided that I would get in on this ground floor opportunity. :)

Yes that would be me! I am a Jamberry nails consultant and I'm actually very excited about it. I joined on Friday and placed my order for my consultant kit. I am sooooo excited. Wait, did I say that already? LOL.
I am planning on throwing an online launch party with a mystery hostess once I receive my kit in the mail. So get ready! If you want to check everything out you can look at my site by clicking the image above or clicking here. I would love to offer anyone out there a chance to maybe even review some. So if you are interested in that, let me know. I would also love to do a 'party swap' with another consultant too. Like Scentsy or something.
The flamingo contest was a flop. I can't believe no grown ups wanted to participate ;). Well I am changing the contest up. I want to see your planks, your owls, and/or your flamingos. Kids are the best and will do anything. So kids your kids to do it. The prize will be a $20 gift card to Target and a set of nail shields of your choice from Jamberry nails. The contest will run until the end of the month, August 31st 8pm CST. You can do a blog post and come back here and leave me your link or you can upload directly to my facebook page. The winner will be chosen on September 1st.
Wow that was long huh? Sorry bout that. See what happens when I don't blog for awhile LOL? Well you can blame BamBam for the sickness he brought into our house 2 weeks ago.
